REVICTO at the “Grand Tour” lectures, Benaki Museum 936 658 REVICTO

We are delighted to announce that on December 10, REVICTO’s principal investigator, Evi Mitsi, gave a lecture as invited speaker at the Benaki Museum.

Titled John Frederick Lewis’s Enigmatic Greek Women and Victorian Τravellers’ Greece, it was the fourth in a series of lectures given on the occasion of the Grand Tour exhibition, which is organized by the Benaki Museum in collaboration with the Government Art Collection UK and the British Embassy at Athens.

Evi Mitsi discussed paintings and sketches by the English orientalist painter John Frederick Lewis made during (or inspired by) his travels in Constantinople and Greece in 1840. Drawing on her research on nineteenth-century British travel accounts and literature on modern Greece, Mitsi explored Lewis’s visual representations of Greek women in connection with the image of the modern Greek woman in texts by various Victorian authors.

The lecture was given in Greek and you may watch it online here.
